CHEM 111
Activity 4.5
Understanding Redox Reactions

1. Record your observations of the reaction of zinc and hydrochloric acid and write a balanced reaction equation for this reaction and idenitfy the physical state of each of the reactants and products.

2. Write the net ionic equation for the reaction of zinc and HCl.

3. What “chemically” happened to the Zn in this reaction? What happened to the H+? Write the half-reactions for each reactant.

4. In the reaction of Zn and HCl, which was oxiidized and which was reduced? Which is the oxidizing agent? Which is the reducing agent?

5. The reaction C6H12O6 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O is a redox reaction. Use the rules for oxidation numbers to assign an oxidation number to each element in the reactants and products.

6. Determine which reactant in the reaction C6H12O6 + O2 ---> CO2 + H2O was oxidized and which was reduced, using the change in oxidation numbers of its elements as they go from reactant to product.
