CH 111 Lecture
Problems Using The Ideal Gas Law
Activity 5.4

1. A scuba diver 40 ft. below the ocean surface inhales 50.0 mL of compressed air from a scuba tank at a pressure of 2280 torr and a temperature of 8°C. What is the pressure of air in the lungs if the gas expands to 150. mL at a body temperature of 37°C?

2. Determine the molar mass of methane if a 6600 mL sample of the gas at 25.0°C and 745 torr has a mass of 4.24 g.

3. A sample of zinc metal is allowed to react completely with and excess of HCl. The balanced reaction equation is: Zn(s) + 2 HCl ---> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g). The hydrogen gas is collected over water at 25.0°C and 7.80 L of gas is collected at a pressure of 0.980 atm. The vapor pressure of water at this temperature is 23.8 torr. What was the mass of zinc used in this experiment?
