Elective Lab
Program |
Your laboratory grade counts twenty-five percent (25%) of your final course grade. Your lab grade will be the combination of a Formal Lab Score (FLS) plus your Elective Lab Score. In particular, your lab grade will consist of 60% from the eight formal labs, including the supplemental reading assignment, to give you your Formal Lab Score and 40% from the Elective Lab Program (explained here and in your lab manual). In general, a lab test will be given at the beginning of each formal lab on the preceding lab. Each lab test will count 10 lab points and will consist of questions in different formats, depending on the material. Seven lab tests will be given and the lowest score will be dropped - giving 60 lab points for those tests. The supplemental reading assignment is due during the last formal lab period and is worth 20 lab points. These 80 lab points are prorated to 60% points to give the Formal Lab Score by noting that proportionally FLS/60 = (raw score)/80, so that FLS = (60/80)(raw score) = (3/4)(raw score). Therefore, also note that (3/4)(supplemental reading 20 lab points) = 15% of your lab grade. Your final lab grade is then the sum of your Formal Lab Score plus the Elective Lab Program points - for a total of 100 possible points for the lab.
You may take an essay makeup test for any lab test you miss during the
semester at the end of your last formal lab, i.e., when the class has
finished with the supplemental reading oral presentations.
A person arriving late for lab has missed the lab test if the first lab
test paper has been handed in already.
Be aware that any form of cheating in this lab will result in my strongly recommending to both the university and Dr. Nealen as the "instructor of record" for this course that a failing grade for the entire course be recorded as an appropriate sanction. (Be aware that this penalty has been officially implemented in this course in the recent past.)
