BI 602 Biometry 3 semester hours
The choice and application of standard, efficient, practical, and appropriate statistical techniques for data analyses in common biological situations. Computer instruction will emphasize the practical application of statistical techniques using statistical packages on microcomputers. Lecture and computer instruction will be combined in four class hours per week.
Summary of Objectives:
To provide the student with the background necessary to choose appropriate statistical techniques for data analyses in common biological research situations.
To provide the student with the background necessary to statistically analyze research data using statistical packages on microcomputers.
To provide the student with the background necessary to correctly interpret statistical results as a means to answer biological questions.
To foster a positive attitude toward the usefulness and necessity of statistical methods in biological research.
To provide the student with the background necessary to read the biological literature with its current emphasis on statistical accountability.
To provide the student with sufficient statistical maturity to actively seek out and explore new statistical methods for new experimental designs and problems when they arise.
Evaluation Methods:
Three tests on statistical concepts and techniques. (67% of course grade.)
Regularly assigned, graded homework problems as examples of specific statistical techniques. Required REPORTS on homework problems will consist of a statement of the biological problem (hypothesis) with a summary of the research conditions, the data of the study, the statistical analyses and statistical results, and the biological conclusions and interpretations - - plus a graded report based on statistical usage or misuse in an article in the biological literature. (33% of course grade.)
