The Lotka-Volterra competition model is one of the most important models in ecology and is taught in virtually every university ecology course. Compete is a computer simulation which can be used to explore the behavior of this classic competition model. By varying parameters such as initial population size, reproductive rate and competition coefficients students can carry out "what if" experiments to study the theoretical dynamics of competing populations. This is a DOS based program that I wrote in Microsoft Professional BASIC 7 some years ago. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Installing and Running Compete The following files are included in the self extracting file COMPETEZ.EXE: COMPETE.EXE - DOS Program HELVA.FON - Font file HELVB.FON - Font file HELVE.FON - Font file README-C.TXT - you're reading it COMPETE.DOC - Laboratory exercise and worksheets written in Word 6.0 for Windows Setup is straightforward: 1. Copy the file COMPETEZ.EXE to a directory of your choice and run it. This will extract all the files to the directory. 2. In order for the graphs to be properly labeled the three font files must be in the working directory. From DOS use the CD command to change directories. C:\>CD C:\yourdirectoryname 3. From DOS run the program by typing COMPETE (or use the RUN manager in Windows). For intraspecific competition set the competition coefficients to zero. With values greater than zero you will get interspecific competition. See the Laboratory Exercise for more information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.
